Forest dept to seek Mamata help for Nort east train accidents

8Jun 2009, 0403 hrs IST, TNNJALPAIGURI: The state forest department is going to seek railway minister Mamata Banerjee's intervention to curb the train accidents that are taking toll on wildlife, particularly hitting hard the elephants in Dooars and Terai. State forest minister Ananta Roy said that the department would soon send a letter to Mamata, asking her to take steps so that such accidents on the railway track that cuts through the Dooars and the Terai can be minimized. "We had written several times to her predecessors. But nothing was done to control such accidents. Mamata Banerjee hails from this state and we are hopeful that she will understand the importance of the issue," Roy said on Saturday. In the past three decades, accidents on the track between New Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar Junction railway stations has killed as many as 43 elephants, six leopards and many other animals including deer and pythons. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Kolkata-/Forest-dept-...
